Apple Season!

I've been visiting the apple orchards in my area, stocking up on apples for both eating and baking. I like Red Delicious best for eating ... especially when they're crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. Bliss!

We're fortunate to be surrounded by apple orchards so there's no reason not to have plenty of fresh apples on hand during the Autumn months. There are a couple that I visit regularly but the one I like best has bushels and bushels of various kinds set out so if you want, you can mix and match different varieties. During the week they put out a metal cash box where you can deposit your money ... completely on the honour system. That's pretty rare these days.

Some of the apples will be made into pies and crisps with the rest being made into applesauce.  There's nothing like homemade applesauce!  It's so easy to do and freezes really well if you want to make more than one batch at a time.  MacIntosh apples are great for making applesauce.  They cook down quickly and have just the right amount of tartness.

Homemade Applesauce
Peel and core 6 large apples.  Slice them into pieces and place in a saucepan with about 1/4 cup water.  Cook over medium heat until they're soft.  Remove from heat and add brown sugar to taste (or leave it unsweetened if you want to use if for baking - applesauce is a great substitute for oil in recipes) and a dash of nutmeg.  Enjoy!

  1. Makes me want to head for the orchard! John has been promised an apple pie soon. Do you have a recommendation for what kind of apples to use for a pie?

Much to my delight our trees (some of which haven't produced much over the last several years) have had a bumper crop :-)

  4. Your photos look so pretty, Lynda! I love this time of year since it's when my favorite apples come into season...honeycrisp and sweet tango. Have you ever tried either of those? Oh, they're so delcious. I'll have to try your applesauce recipe. My kids would love that.

  9. My very favorite thing about autumn – picking apples and making applesauce! And I agree about Red Delicious – definitely they have to be cold and crisp. Beautiful images, Lynda!

  10. These photos are just lovely.
I have made so much apple crisp this year... and some applesauce. But, being the non cook that I am, I haven't mustered up the courage to try a pie yet. But, I'll bet you make a scrumptious pie!

  11. I never knew this was so easy to make...silly me! hehe. I ordered Macoun apples from the grocery delivery and when they got here they had run out of them and I got none! :( Not even a substitute...apparently there is no substitute for Macouns. oh well!

  12. Red Delicious have always been my favorite, Golden Delicious a close second. We used to go apple picking as a kid. But I remember when things were tight, sometimes those picked apples was all there was to eat.
