A symbol of hope

Hi everyone!  It's good to finally be back!  These past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind.  We had a really lovely time with my brother-in-law and his wife but I'll admit that it was a little tiring.  I'm not used to that pace anymore!  We've just been catching our breath this week, slowly getting back to some sort of routine.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. Before beginning my journey with ovarian cancer, I have to admit that I knew very little about this disease or that it even had a month, a symbol or a colour (it's teal just in case you were wondering).  The sunflower is a symbol of hope.  Hope that there will soon be a screening test so that women can be diagnosed when the cancer is in its early stages.  There isn't a screening test for ovarian cancer ... yet.

The symptoms are vague (it's been known as the disease that whispers) and often misdiagnosed (like mine!) resulting in most cancers being diagnosed at an advanced stage.  The statistics are pretty dismal.  I don't pay any attention to the statistics anymore.  I know what they are but I'm not a statistic.  I'm a survivor. Or surthrivor. Or overcomer.  Whatever term you want to use.  I'm fighting this disease with everything I've got.  And I'm going to win.  {You hear that cancer?}

Yep, that's me!  My husband took this while we were visiting Niagara Falls last week.  I wanted to show you how long my hair is!  lol!  It's nice to finally have hair again, even if it is super short.  I don't look like a cancer patient anymore.

Hope you have a great weekend!  See you next week.

xoxo,
Lynda

  2. Cancer can't win as we are all fighting so hard. Battle in numbers can work wonders. We can kick butt and use lipstick at the same time. Was at Boston General Cancer Center with my niece last week. Melanoma is in our grips...no matter the cancer we fight like girls..Love is our battle field...Love to you and you look gorgeous! Hugs...

  4. Oh Lynda, you're looking wonderful!! And your hair!! It's gorgeous...so hip and so funky and isn't it a wonderful feeling when you see it growing again!? :) I did knew that Ovarian Cancer is known by the colour teal...which I think is bright and hopeful in itself. And sunflowers are hope -- in so many ways. Love the ones you've photographed.

    As for you not being a statistic...well you know I'm in 100% agreement with that. Our pathology is "numbers" and there are statistics (which are usually about 5 years out of date), but we are not those numbers...we are us...who we are, where we live in our hearts and our souls and what we mean to other people who love us. So thrive on surthrivor (have to say I like that one!)...and keep smiling that beautiful smile of yours! xo
